Rote memorization doesn't always work

B is old enough to love hearing stories about herself as a baby.  It is so funny.  One I was reminded of last night was of a year ago.  So she was just over 2 and the nanny (a nurse) was chatting with her about her favorite subject - the human body.   Not in the typical inputs and outputs that most 2 year olds are into.  She wanted to study the bones and the body and the lungs.

Just yesterday she stopped the neighbor and said "smoking is bad for you."  I tried to get her away from the fence.  How horrible to be shamed by a 2 year old in your back yard.  That is no good.  But she went on.  "No really.  It turns your lungs black.  It says so in my body book."   I try to apologize to the neighbor.  She says no worries. But a 3.5 year old is difficult to distract.
"It is hard to quit.  But I know how.  Would you like to know?"
Lady says: "Sure, I have been trying for years."
B: "The first thing you do, you put it down.  yeah.  Put it down.  Then walk away."   (pause to wait for the lady to actually put it down)
Lady: "Ok, then what?"
B: "Then stop being mean to your body.  Do you remember what I said.  Black lungs!"
ARGH.

But anyway.  When she was little, she learned that the nose was made up of skin and cartilage.  The funny part wasn't really that she could memorize.  This kid is a whiz at that.  From day one she wanted to pronounce things perfectly.  She wants you to say words slowly so that she can make all the exact sounds.  To her, friendly should be pronounced  Fr-en-DA-lee. Why would any letters be subtle or silent? Anyway.  I asked her over and over again to hear cartilage. It amused me that she was so little with such big words.  But when I asked her to repeat the trick, and had papa ask her what her nose was made of she said "Boogies."
